E.THOMAS – THE ITALIAN SPIRIT OF FINE BLENDED FABRICS

Textile Heritage by Lake Lugano

Nestled along the shores of Lake Lugano in Brusimpiano, northern Italy, E.Thomas was founded by Ernesto Thomas in 1922. Established as Italy was recovering from the First World War, the mill gradually became an important part of the local community, providing employment and contributing to economic recovery. Across four generations of the Thomas and Ronchi families, the house has maintained a close connection to the place where its story began.

The Art of Blending Natural Fibres

In the world of fine tailoring fabrics, E.Thomas is recognised for its ability to combine natural fibres with distinctive qualities. Alongside high-quality Australian wool, the mill works with silk, linen, cashmere and mohair to create collections with varied textures, colours and wearing characteristics. Its wool–silk–linen fabrics, in particular, capture the spirit of Italian tailoring: soft, relaxed and expressive.

What makes E.Thomas fabrics particularly interesting is how different fibres influence the appearance and feel of a garment. Wool contributes elasticity and helps maintain structure, silk can introduce a subtle lustre and softness, while linen lends natural texture and a relaxed character. The proportions of each fibre, together with the weave and fabric weight, determine how the cloth drapes, retains its shape and responds to the wearer’s movement.

E.Thomas Fabrics in Bespoke Tailoring

In bespoke tailoring, blended fabrics offer an appealing alternative for those seeking a style beyond the traditional business suit. A blazer crafted from a wool–silk–linen blend can be worn for social gatherings, less formal working days or weekend occasions. However, the choice of material should still reflect the climate, level of activity and frequency of wear, as not all linen blends offer the same degree of breathability or wrinkle resistance.

At VBS Tailor, E.Thomas fabrics bring a more versatile perspective to bespoke tailoring. From colour and texture to the way a fabric feels when worn, each material provides the foundation for a garment shaped around the wearer’s physique, personal style and individual way of life.
