WHAT IS FULL CANVAS IN BESPOKE TAILORING?
In the world of high-end tailoring, canvas refers to the inner layer placed between a suit’s outer fabric and its inner lining. Traditionally made from horsehair, wool, or blended cotton, this layer helps the jacket hold its shape and drape naturally on the body. There are three main types of canvas construction: fused, half canvas, and full canvas.
Full Canvas is the most premium structure, where the canvas layer extends throughout the entire front of the jacket — from the shoulders down to the hem — unlike half canvas, which only covers the chest area. This method requires expert craftsmanship, more time, and meticulous attention to detail in every stitch.
THE OUTSTANDING ADVANTAGES OF FULL CANVAS
1. NATURAL DRAPE THAT IMPROVES OVER TIME
Unlike fused construction where the interlining is glued, full canvas uses a floating canvas hand-stitched into the garment. This allows the layer to move naturally with the wearer’s body. Over time, the canvas “molds” to the wearer’s shape, resulting in a refined, sculpted silhouette without the need for extra padding or shaping.
