Nestled among the breathtaking hills of the Alps, Biella has long been recognized as a global center for wool production, and our visit to the Drago mill affirmed exactly why this region continues to hold such a prestigious position.
A LEGACY WOVEN FROM TRADITION AND INNOVATION
The story of the Drago mill is a testament to the enduring spirit of Italian craftsmanship. Originally founded as a small spinning company in Lessona, a quaint town in the renowned textile region of Biella, Drago grew under the leadership of the Drago family. In the 1990s, Paolo and Daniela—children of the founders—brought innovation and modern technology to the company. The acquisition of Lanificio Fintes in 1993, and its full integration into the Drago Group by 2001, marked a major turning point. It allowed Drago to fully control the entire production process—from sourcing raw materials to producing finished fabrics.
THE ART OF FABRIC CREATION
During our visit, we witnessed the intricate process that transforms raw wool into luxurious suiting fabrics. The journey begins with the meticulous selection of Merino wool, renowned for its softness and fine fibers. These fibers are spun into yarn using advanced machinery at Drago’s facility in Lessona, where real-time quality control ensures consistency. The weaving department, equipped with state-of-the-art looms, produces ultra-fine fabrics, while the finishing unit in Verrone imparts Drago’s signature “hand feel”—a unique texture and drape that define the character of their cloth.
